YNAB: imported card payment looks like spending
Updated · 2 min read
If an imported credit-card repayment appears as ordinary spending in YNAB, first establish which bank paid which card, whether both accounts are in the plan, and whether a payment was already entered manually. Two statement sides can represent one repayment, not two purchases.
LocalExtract can extract PDF statement rows locally. It does not create YNAB payment links or infer the receiving card from a payee description. The CSV columns are date, description, amount.
The desktop apps export date, description, and amount as CSV. Open CSV in Excel to save an XLSX workbook. Statement support varies: verify the result against your own PDF.
Identify the payment object before editing
The current Credit Card Payments guide, updated October 11, 2026, distinguishes payments from accounts inside the plan from funds outside it. Check the actual bank reference, date, amount, paying account and receiving card.
Look for an existing manually entered payment and its matched import. The guide explicitly says not to delete the imported version after it has matched. An outflow in the paying bank and inflow in the card account are the expected two account sides of that transfer.
Use the current web fields for an unrecognized imported payment
The official imported-payment instructions explain the first payment between linked accounts and the current web controls:
- Open the relevant account register and select the imported transaction.
- In Payee, choose the bank account that paid, under Payments and Transfers.
- In Category, choose the receiving card under Credit Card Payments.
- After checking the pair and amount, choose Approve or Save.
Do not copy an older generic “all transfers have no category” instruction into this card-payment workflow. The documented source concerns imported linked-account payments; it does not prove that every CSV import will automatically identify the card. Check the resulting object in your actual register.
Distinguish two cards paid the same amount
Our synthetic records show a bank outflow of 60 and an inflow of 60 on Card A, with a matching payment reference. Card B also has a separate 60 inflow but another reference. Equal amounts do not make Card B the destination of the first payment.
The synthetic account-pair worksheet checks account identity and preserves the unrelated Card B event. It does not execute YNAB. The official guide notes that with several cards, recognition may wait for both bank and card sides; do not force the first equal-valued candidate.
An outside-plan payment follows a different route
If the funding account is not in the plan, the current web guide uses a regular card inflow with an ordinary payee and Inflow: Ready to Assign, rather than inventing an internal paying account. Check the applicable documented branch before editing.
Review the card’s Available payment-category amount separately from its debt and statement payment. Recording a payment in YNAB does not send money to the issuer. For source-cycle and spending totals, see the card CSV guide. Here the task is identifying the repayment pair. Prepare a PDF locally, then verify the YNAB association independently.
Official YNAB documentation checked October 16, 2026; no payment or account edit executed.
