KMyMoney CSV: Banking or Investment for cash records?
Updated · 2 min read
A CSV downloaded from a broker does not automatically require Investment import in KMyMoney. Equally, rows containing cash do not automatically belong in Banking. Choose the route from the actual activity fields and destination account relationships.
LocalExtract extracts one statement PDF locally to date, description, amount CSV. It does not recover missing securities, quantities, prices or investment actions from those three fields.
The desktop apps export date, description, and amount as CSV. Open CSV in Excel to save an XLSX workbook. Statement support varies: verify the result against your own PDF.
Open the importer and identify its data type
The KMyMoney 5.2 CSV Importer handbook describes File → Import → CSV. If absent, check Settings → Configure KMyMoney → Plugins → CSV Importer rather than choosing an unrelated format.
The Start page offers Banking, Investment, Currency prices and Stock prices. A named profile stores formatting choices. Its name is arbitrary and it can serve several accounts; a profile labelled with a broker name is not proof of the destination account. Initially leave Skip setup unchecked while verifying the layout.
Compare activity meaning, not just the amount column
Banking offers a single Amount or separate Debit/credit mapping, with sign/indicator choices. Investment additionally interprets Type/Action, security identity, quantity, price and fees. A three-column cash extract cannot establish whether a debit represents a share purchase, fee or transfer.
The handbook also says an Investment row without a symbol can be treated as a brokerage-type checking item. Thus “no security symbol” does not by itself justify switching every row to Banking. Inspect the actual brokerage cash account and any related investment account.
Our invented review contains a cash transfer with date/amount/reference, alongside a share purchase with action, symbol, quantity and price. The synthetic data-type worksheet flags the missing investment fields in the cash-only extract. It classifies evidence completeness, not a successful KMyMoney import or investment advice.
Check the preview and the receiving accounts
Review separators, encoding, start/end lines and dates. The ordinary preview table is not a source editor: edits there are not kept for import. Correct the source or importer settings, not merely the displayed cell. The handbook documents a separate securities/symbols page whose edits do affect imported security identity; do not confuse the two views.
For Investment, verify exact security names and the requested brokerage/checking account. An incorrect account name can allow import while leaving transactions without proper category assignment. “Import completed” is therefore not a complete account-relationship check. Review destination ledger, transferred cash and any uncategorized items.
For generic date/decimal issues, use the CSV locale guide. This page concerns KMyMoney’s importer type and account relationships. Prepare PDF cash rows locally only as source data; obtain original investment details when the task requires them.
Official KMyMoney 5.2 handbook checked October 16, 2026; no import executed.
