Bank statement PDF pages out of order: build a folio map
Updated · 2 min read
Correct a bank statement’s page order only after source page identities establish an unambiguous sequence. Printed folios, account and statement period can support a page map. Dates or an assumed odd/even scanner pattern alone are not sufficient to reorder financial evidence.
The desktop apps export date, description, and amount as CSV. Open CSV in Excel to save an XLSX workbook. Statement support varies: verify the result against your own PDF.
Make the page map before moving thumbnails
Preserve the original and work on an authorized copy. Record current PDF position, printed page identity, account and period. Resolve duplicate, missing or conflicting folios first. Sorting cannot recover an absent page; a page from another statement must not be inserted merely because its date fits.
- In Acrobat desktop, open All tools → Organize pages, the route in Adobe’s page-moving instructions.
- Move the intended thumbnails according to the verified page map. Do not substitute an assumed scanner pattern for that map.
- Save the working copy and reopen it.
- Compare every resulting position with the map. Confirm that the page count and source membership are unchanged.
Protected or signed originals may restrict editing; retain them and obtain an appropriate authorized working source. See Adobe’s restrictions on signed PDFs before editing a signed original; do not treat page reordering as signature preservation.
Check membership as well as sequence
The synthetic folio exercise begins with printed folios 1, 3, 2, 4 in physical positions 1–4. The verified map gives a new order of original positions 1, 3, 2, 4. Separate controls with duplicate folio 2 or absent folio 3 stay blocked rather than being declared repaired.
| New working-copy position | Original PDF position | Verified printed folio |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 2 | 3 | 2 |
| 3 | 2 | 3 |
| 4 | 4 | 4 |
Keep the original-to-working-position mapping with any extracted transactions, especially where a row continues onto another page. Do not claim the reordering test validates PDF extraction, signatures or bank-layout compatibility. It checks only the stipulated page map.
For missing text or OCR coverage, use the scanned-statement guide separately. An ordered document can still contain an unreadable page, and a readable text layer does not establish that the complete statement is present.
For a PDF-only bank source, download LocalExtract. It processes one PDF locally to date, description, amount CSV; it does not access platform accounts or synchronize accounting records.
