PDF Portfolio bank statements: extract the listed components

Updated · 2 min read

A PDF Portfolio can hold several components, including files that are not PDFs. Its cover or displayed page count is not an inventory of the attached statements. Extract and identify the components before handing a statement to a one-PDF extraction workflow.

Official reference.

The desktop apps export date, description, and amount as CSV. Open CSV in Excel to save an XLSX workbook. Statement support varies: verify the result against your own PDF.

Extract listed components in Acrobat desktop

  1. Open the retained original Portfolio in Acrobat desktop and inspect its component list.
  2. Select the required listed files and choose Extract From Portfolio.
  3. Select a separate destination and save. Preserve the untouched container and record each original component name and saved location.
  4. Reopen the extracted files individually. Check actual type, account, period and page coverage before selecting a PDF for extraction work.

Adobe’s Portfolio instructions describe component extraction. The inventory table below does not convert TXT into PDF or establish that every component is a bank statement.

Do not assume every component is a bank statement. Check actual file type, account, period and page coverage after extraction. A web file or spreadsheet needs its own appropriate review; changing its extension to PDF does not convert it. Security restrictions may prevent the requested operation, in which case seek an authorized original rather than bypassing restrictions.

Reconcile the component inventory

Use the exercise’s explicit component inventory rather than counting the cover:

Component identityActual type in the invented inventoryNext review
P1PDFCheck its own account, period and pages
P2PDFCheck separately; not merged with P1
N1TXTRetain as a note, not a third PDF statement

The inventory has three members, two PDF candidates and one cover page. Those are three different counts with different purposes. Requiring each member identity prevents a complete-looking cover from hiding an omitted component.

The synthetic container exercise lists two PDF statements and one TXT note under one Portfolio. A one-page cover does not mean one statement, and three components do not mean three PDFs. The control requires both statement identities and preserves the note as a non-PDF component.

Before extraction work, compare the saved component list with the container inventory and reopen each selected file. Missing or duplicate names remain explicit exceptions. Preserve container-to-member provenance even if an extracted statement is later renamed for internal handling. The exercise checks a fictional inventory, not Acrobat extraction or PDF parsing.

Once a component is confirmed as the intended statement, use the general PDF-to-CSV workflow. LocalExtract handles one selected PDF at a time; a Portfolio is not evidence of a supported desktop batch queue or automatic processing of every attachment.
