Relay statements: check coverage across business accounts

Updated · 3 min read

When Relay has several business checking or savings accounts, verify a statement for each requested account and period. Downloading a bundle proves that an export finished; it does not prove that every account needed for the close was selected.

Use Relay’s native statement export first. If the working source is PDF-only, LocalExtract can prepare rows for review, but account coverage must come from the issued documents and the business’s account inventory.

The desktop apps export date, description, and amount as CSV. Open CSV in Excel to save an XLSX workbook. Statement support varies: verify the result against your own PDF.

Select accounts explicitly on the web

Relay’s statement-download instructions cover checking and savings accounts:

  1. Open Accounts → Statements in the web app.
  2. Select the required month or year range, then Export → Download statements.
  3. Choose PDF, CSV or OFX, as appropriate for the task.
  4. Select the actual checking or savings accounts required and finish with Done.

Write down the selected accounts before leaving the export screen. Do not silently extend these instructions to a credit-account statement or assume a similarly named reserve account is included. A filename alone is weaker evidence than the account identity and period printed in the document.

Mobile starts from one account

On mobile, open Accounts, select the individual account and use its three-dot menu → Download statements. Choose the periods and PDF or CSV, then download. Relay’s help identifies OFX as a web-only option.

This difference matters when someone sends “all the statements” from a phone: the download may cover several periods of the account they opened, rather than the several accounts your review requires. Ask which account was selected instead of requesting another identical download without clarifying scope.

Check an account-period matrix against the received files

Create one row per required account-period pair, using nonsecret working aliases. Compare the request list with the received statement headers; mark absent and ambiguous pairs separately. Do not add balances from different currencies or accounts to manufacture a consolidated statement.

Synthetic September requestReceived matching statement?Follow-up
Operating accountYesRetain matched original
Reserve accountYesRetain matched original
Tax accountNoRequest this specific account-period

Here, two received documents cover only two of three requested pairs. The synthetic coverage matrix preserves the missing Tax-account pair. Python checks set membership; it does not enumerate a real Relay business’s accounts or inspect a downloaded bundle.

If account names changed, use authorized account evidence to resolve the identity. If an account was closed or a period cannot be downloaded, clarify availability through Relay rather than assuming the missing pair had no activity. This article does not establish closed-account history limits.

Keep source coverage separate from extraction quality. A clean CSV from Operating cannot replace the missing Tax statement. The bookkeeper handoff guide explains how to retain source and revision records without copying a full conversion procedure here.

LocalExtract processes one PDF locally and exports date, description, amount; it does not discover Relay accounts or produce a consolidated bank statement. Download for a PDF source.
