Monzo Statements to Excel: Native CSV and Pot Transfer Checks

Updated · 6 min read

Monzo offers native CSV: inspect it before extracting the same rows from PDF. This guide covers the UK product and the task described below.

The desktop apps export date, description, and amount as CSV. Open CSV in Excel to save an XLSX workbook. Statement support varies: verify the result against your own PDF.

Start with the bank’s native table

Monzo’s official statement guide offers PDF, CSV and QIF after choosing dates in Home → the card’s three-dot menu → Bank statements. For transaction analysis, select the available CSV covering your required dates. Keep the untouched native file and the corresponding PDF when available. A bank-provided table avoids retyping data; it does not eliminate the need to inspect dates, account coverage and column types.

This UK guide does not describe Monzo’s actual CSV columns or validate any PDF layout. Read your file’s headers. If it contains more fields than date, description, amount, do not discard those fields until you know the purpose of the workbook. A three-column copy is a chosen working view, not a complete replacement for every native attribute.

Decide whether you are measuring spending or an account balance

Monzo’s statement help includes Pots. An internal transfer can change one account’s balance without being household consumption. Keep its meaning in a separate classification column in Excel. The following exercise is invented and does not claim to reproduce Monzo’s export format.

Invented movementIn a main-account cash checkIn a spending analysis
Salary received, 250 unitsInflow if posted to this accountIncome, not a purchase
Transfer to a Pot, 100 unitsOutflow if posted to this accountInternal movement; not automatically spending
Purchase paid, 40 unitsOutflowExpense if that is the actual transaction meaning
Transfer from a Pot, 30 unitsInflow if posted to this accountInternal movement; not automatically income

If your workbook combines balances from multiple containers, first define which containers and currency it covers. Do not reconcile the combined rows against one account’s opening and closing figures. Two equal-value transfer entries can both be valid in separate records; deleting one by amount alone can remove a real row. For a spending report, classify internal movements deliberately rather than calling every debit a purchase.

Preserve dates and import the chosen fields

For one selected account, a cash convention makes inflows positive and outflows negative. Read the source date’s meaning rather than substituting the export date. Use ISO-style dates for a manually prepared table to avoid treating a UK day/month value as a US month/day value. This example is synthetic:

date,description,amount
2026-09-01,Example salary,250.00
2026-09-02,Example transfer to Pot,-100.00
2026-09-03,"Example purchase, supplies",-40.00

In Excel, choose Data → From Text/CSV, open the copy, inspect the comma delimiter, dates and decimal numbers, then load. Microsoft’s text/CSV import guide explains the preview. Quoted descriptions follow RFC 4180. Keep transfer classification in a manual column. If you save XLSX, that happens in Excel, not in LocalExtract.

When the only source you have is PDF

Use the Monzo document collection guide to establish account and period first. For manual transcription or local extraction, enter one actual posted movement per row and check wrapped descriptions, signs and missing pages. Reconcile opening plus signed movements with closing only when all figures belong to the same account, currency and period. A matching total cannot detect every incorrect description or date.

Check the method with invented records

We recomputed three deliberately constructed cases on October 11, 2026 using decimal arithmetic: complete rows, an omitted fee and a duplicated movement. The reference total and every number are invented. This checks the reconciliation method only: no bank account, real PDF, OCR result or LocalExtract output was tested. The same learning aid is used across these guides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this reproduce Monzo’s native CSV headings?

No. The three-field table is an invented working example. Inspect and preserve the actual bank file’s headers and any additional information.

Is money moved to a Pot always an expense?

No. It can be an internal movement. Distinguish account-balance reconciliation from household spending and retain an explicit classification.

Can I delete equal amounts as duplicates?

No. Compare account, source period, dates and transaction meaning. Equal amounts or transfer legs can be separate valid entries.

Does a balanced CSV prove the PDF was extracted correctly?

No. Check each included row. These arithmetic exercises are invented and do not establish Monzo layout or LocalExtract compatibility.

If PDF is the relevant source

LocalExtract processes one PDF at a time on the device and exports CSV with date, description, amount. Parsing and OCR do not require uploading the statement. This is a working table that needs comparison with the original; no bank compatibility was validated here. There is no direct XLSX, QBO or OFX export, bulk queue or automatic accounting sync. To obtain XLSX, import the checked CSV and save from Excel.

The free evaluation covers ten pages in total. Pro is USD 10/month or USD 60/year. Account, subscription, update and periodic Pro checks need network access. See downloads and product scope.

Sources and verification scope

Public official guidance checked October 11, 2026. Account controls, document availability and bank layouts were not authenticated-tested. The method exercises use invented records, not actual bank samples or measured extraction results.

Updated October 11, 2026: Added task-specific source decisions, date/amount examples and CSV import checks. No bank format or app output was validated.

Prefer the available native table, define the account boundary and classify Pot movements before analysing spending. If only PDF is available, trial a local conversion and compare every output row with that original.
